Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and validity of Role Quality Scales developed by Baruch and Barnett(1986) for Korean women. The self-report format questionnaires were administered to 235 married women with job and children. They were including 87 service workers, 51 sales workers, and 48 manufacturing workers, 24 public officers and 23 clerical workers. Among the subjects for the study, the age ranges of 49.8% was from 36 to 45 years. 59.6% had 2 children.

Psychometric testing revealed that the three scales were found to be internally consistent, showing a Cronbach¡¯s alpha of .87(job role quality), .93(marital role quality), and .85(parental role quality).

Factor analysis was performed to confirm whether the scales represented their subfactor as suggested in the literature. The result of factor analysis for the job role quality led to a 6 factor for 34 items which were given the name of job stress, negative interpersonal relationship, positive interpersonal relationship, job security, autonomy, and pay. For the marital role quality scale, 5 factors were selected for 22 items, which were given the name of husband¡¯s support, economic stability, esteem, intimacy, and partnership. In the case of parental role quality, 4 factors were selected for 20 items, which were given the name of parent-child relationship, parenting burden, parent identity, and parenting enjoyment. Three scales were significantly correlated with role satisfaction in testing the criterion validity(p=0.0001).

The results indicated that role quality scales were reliable and valid in producing useful information to predict health status of Korean women.
